If it is wrong on the actual 1099-R, do not change it. The IRS gets a copy, and will just change it back. Ask the issuer for a corrected 1099-R.

Just "P" and no other code like "J" or "1"?
Is the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box checked?
And is there anything in box 2a?

A code "P" is a return of contributions taxable in 2017. If you will answer the above questions I can give you the details how to report it.
