My employer did not check box 13 for retirement plan, but I contribute to a 401k. Do I need to have them fix it? What effect does it have if not checked?

If you did make contributions to your 401K, the amount should show in Box 12 on your W-2, with a Code D.

You could also be eligible for a Retirement Savings Credit for your contributions.

The amount you contributed is usually the difference between the Box 1 and Box 3 amounts on your W-2.

You should ask your employer for a Corrected W-2.
