We are FL residents and were for all of 2022.
Husband works remotely for MN employer.
His W-2 has box 16 blank and box 17 has MN taxes withheld. We have no idea why MN state income taxes were taken out since no MN wages.
His HR/payroll departments are not responding to his questions for what this is.
Has anyone had this happen?

Are you a resident of FL ? MN taxes you if you are still considered a MN resident ... read up here : https://www.mncpa.org/publications/footnote/2020-12/working-from-the-beach-minnesota-residency-and-u....
Now if you are not a MN resident ... then look at the last paycheck stub ... did they actually withhold for MN and you failed to notice this all year and have it corrected earlier ? If so you will need to file a MN non resident return to get back the erroneous withholding. Put the same amount from box 1 in box 16 so you can efile the fed & state.
Next if you are still working for this company please make sure they stop this practice and refund any MN withholding now while it is an easy thing to fix on the first quarter payroll reporting.
At the W0-2 screen, make sure you put "MN" in box 15, on the line where there is an amount in box 17.
I think you want box 16 blank (or 0) in order to get MN to give you a refund. Otherwise, you may have to attached an explanatory statement and mail in your MN non resident return.
