To qualify for Head of Household you Must have a qualifying person as a dependent on your tax return.  If you do not have a dependent then you file as Single.

///

If you are claiming your mom as a dependent and it is not offering you Head of Household as a filing status, you might have answered something incorrectly in MY INFO.  When you entered her as a dependent, it asks if SHE paid for over half her expenses--so you need to say NO.

If you qualify as Head of Household, when you enter your marital status (single or married filing separately) into MyInfo, and then enter your qualifying dependent, TurboTax will offer HOH as your filing status.

"She made slightly over the $4,000 mark to define her as a dependent"

What does that mean?

Was her Gross Income 4,700 or more?

"To meet this test, a person's gross income for the year must be less than $4,700.
Gross income defined.

Gross income is all income in the form of money, property, and services that isn't exempt from tax.
In a manufacturing, merchandising, or mining business, gross income is the total net sales minus the cost of goods sold, plus any miscellaneous income from the business.
Gross receipts from rental property are gross income. Don't deduct taxes, repairs, or other expenses to determine the gross income from rental property.
Gross income includes a partner's share of the gross (not net) partnership income.
Gross income also includes all taxable unemployment compensation, taxable social security benefits, and certain amounts received as scholarship and fellowship grants."

Thank you for this! When I try to claim her as a dependent in my info, when I click "Yes" to "Was her income greater than $4,700?" the second question ("Did you pay for more than half of her living expenses?") disappears, so I can't answer it at all...Any ideas?

If her gross income is 4,700 or more, she would not be your dependent.

If you have no dependents, you cannot file Head Of Household.
