Unfiled taxes 2016/2017

I need some advice.

I was notified by the IRS that the reason my 2019 tax return is being held is because they did not receive my 1040's for both 2016 and 2017.

It's a long story, but suffice it to say that neither year was filed and on top of that I am no longer in possession of any of my tax documents for those years that I would need in order to file.  W2's, 1099's, Schedule K's etc.

What are my options?  How do I proceed from here?

I have attempted contacting the IRS to discuss this but apparently it's not possible to speak with a human over the phone.

I need advice on what I can do.  I can't file the 1040's without my tax documents for those years and it would take me forever to procure them again.  Several companies I worked for at those times are no longer in business.

Any help is appreciated.  Thank you.

you can request a transcript for each year from the IRS.  they will only contain info on items of income and all W-2 info except for the state part if any.  It should also have mortgage info.   for full K-1 info you may have to go back to partnership.

see this link for ways to get IRS transcripts

in your situation I strongly recommend you engage the services of a pro.

SS Admin will send you your W-2 for any year for the small processing fee of $81.

Of the major tax softwares, at least one is still selling the 2016,2017 and earlier years program.
