Underpayment Penalty - impact due to new tax deadline July 15,2020

As per last calculation with April 15,2020 deadline, I had underpayment penalty of $82 as tax deduction on salary/paystub was less throughout the year. I think this $82 was calcuated by turbotax based on return filing date of 25th Mar,2020. This amount increases lightly if I choose my final filing date 15th April,2020.

Now with new deadline and elimination of penalties, what will be my new underpayment pentalty, if I complete filing on July 01, 2020. What will the underpayment penalty ?

1. Zero - there will not be any penalty or interest charges till July 15,2020

2. Remain ~$82 (actually little more than $82, as penalty increases with filing date April 15, 2020) - based on last deadline April15, 2020

3. Increase based on actual planned future filing date (eg July 01,2020).

Thanks.

Underpayment Penalty - impact due to new tax deadline July 15,2020

It will remain the same. There are two types of penalties, one for underpayment and one for late payment. You have the first type. During the year 2019, you failed to withhold the proper amount of tax.

Late payment penalties have been waived.

As a result of the postponement of the due date for filing Federal income tax returns and making Federal income tax payments from April 15, 2020, to July 15, 2020, the period beginning on April 15, 2020, and ending on July 15, 2020, will be disregarded in the calculation of any interest, penalty, or addition to tax for failure to file the Federal income tax returns or to pay the Federal income taxes postponed by this notice. Interest, penalties, and additions to tax with respect to such postponed Federal income tax filings and payments will begin to accrue on July 16, 2020.
