Unable to enter property taxes

Another post response to a similar subject said if you enter property taxes on a 1098 form (relating to mortgage payments), you must make a change in that form for the property tax to register in the deductions section. My mortgage has been paid off for several years, so I don't have a form 1098. I entered "No" to "Did you pay any home loans in 2023?".  The next screen is "Enter the property tax paid in 2023". The first line where you can enter data is "Property taxes on your main home". The box to the right of that line contains "0.00" and is locked, preventing any change to the value. The other two data entry boxes on that screen -- for different property taxes -- allow values to be entered.

Unable to enter property taxes

You can enter the property taxes for your main home on the 2nd line, and they will go to the same place on Schedule A.     If the grayed out field has a $0 stuck, try to either:

  • Right-click on the field with the $0 and choose Supporting Details or
  • Click on Edit at the top and choose Supporting Details.

Clear out anything carried over from last year; delete all the fields, or use the Red X to remove each line item.   Sometimes a $0 gets stuck in the supporting details' worksheet when using the Windows version of TurboTax.   Usually removing the supporting details allows successful e-filing.

Unable to enter property taxes

The box with a $0 is locked because there are Supporting Details.

Put your cursor in that box and then click on Edit on the top of the desktop program screen.  Click on Add Supporting Details.  Click on Remove at the top of the window.  You can now enter the property taxes paid.
