Unable to eFile my NY State return

I'm getting the following message after I was done with my NY State:

Not Eligible for Electronic Filing
Why? Well, it looks like you have a tax situation in your New York return that makes it ineligible for e-filing.

Reason for e-file ineligibility:

Returns with state and/or local withholding from sources other than Federal Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-G and 1099-R.

These rules are set by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.

The good news is you can still print your New York return and file it by mail.

I've seen a few posts about this, but the workaround hasn't helped including removing Box 14, etc.  I've been able eFile both Federal and State. This is the first year I've gotten this message.  Can anyone help?  I tried calling TT yesterday and they weren't able to help either. Thanks.

Tax laws change, tax forms change and procedures do too.

You do not state what the form is that you were rejected for if it is the case that a non-recognized form for NY has tax withheld.  I can only suggest that you edit the form that is causing the problem, delete the state withholding if there was in fact withholding taken, and re-enter the amount of state withholding as an additional payment under estimated tax payments.  The following steps should assist you in entering the withholding amount:

  1. On the left of your screen click on "Deductions and Credits"
  2. Scroll down to "Estimates and Other Taxes Paid"
  3. Click on "Start" or "Revisit" at "Estimated Tax Payments"
  4. Click on "Start" or "Revisit" " at State estimated taxes for 2022"
  5. Answer yes
  6. Scroll down and click on "+Add another payment"
  7. For the date enter 12/31/2022 and the amount of withholding that is in question
  8. Click continue
  9. Click done
  10. Click continue and you will return to the main summary page.

Unable to eFile my NY State return

It's nearly end of March 2025, and I'm using the TurboTax Premier 2024 and I'm having the same frustrating experience with eFiling for NYS.  Fed efile seems to be fine. But, NYS efile isn't happening.  The reason pointed out by TT isn't helpful.  I only have W-2 and 1099-G and i've double checked them all...

I really don't want to print my NYS for mailing. why did i pay for Turbox tax in the first place...

I my particular case, i found the reason and managed to fix the issue and efiled successfully for both Federal and NY State.

I printed the complete tax return to a PDF for comparison. Saved a backup copy of my TT file. I then started from the beginning as a new return and imported as little as possible from last year's return...

in any case, i did a stare and compare and found out that TT was counting my NYS withholding twice in one of the W2s!.  Not sure how that happened.  suffice to say, my refund was a lot less, but I managed to efile my returns and probably saved myself an audit from the NYS Fiance Dep!
