Turbotax recommended I choose the itemized versus the standard deduction however it seems I have to pay more with an itemized. How can I tell how the two were calculated?

The total of your entered itemized deductions are compared to the standard deduction thresholds for your filing status. That's really all there is to the calculation.
You can see which one gives you the greater deduction by:
- Signing into your return, and selecting the 'take me to my return' button
- Type 'itemized deductions, choosing in the search box, then select the 'jump to' link
Check or uncheck the small box next to 'Change my deduction' to see how you refund is changed.
