TurboTax Glitch - Balance Due changed after I filed and reopened the software

Hi Everyone,

I was filing a tax return using TurboTax Home and Business 2021 on a mac desktop. Everything was going well and before I filled I decided to print my 2021 Tax Return. It was showing I owed money. For this example, it was showing I owed $3000. So then I proceeded to eFile my taxes. Saved and then closed the program.

I opened the return the next day and it recalculated my tax return when it opened and to my surprise I now owed only $1000. What the heck????? So I printed the new return and saw the following:

1. Form 1040 changed to 1040-SR (SR for seniors)

2. Line 6b of the original was blank BUT was now filled with correct value on 1040-SR

3. Line 25b was blank on the original BUT was now filled with correct value on 1040-SR

So TurboTax filed the wrong return!!!!!

How do I correct this?

From the line numbers you mentioned, it sounds like the taxable amount for an SSA-1099 for Social Security benefits was not correct (line 6b).  If you had Federal Tax withheld on your SSA-1099 this may have populated the amount in Line 25b.

Click this link to make sure your return was actually filed.  Did you receive an email saying your Efile was Accepted?

If you determine that your return was not actually filed yet, you can go to the FILE section and complete the Efile process.

You may want to check your entry for Form SSA-1099.  Here's How to Enter Social Security Benefits (SSA-1099)

If you determine that your return was actually filed incorrectly, you will need to Amend your Return.  However, an amended return does not 'catch up' to your original return and correct it.  It's processed separately and can take 12-16 weeks to process.

If that applies, go by the original Amount Due.  Once your Amended Return is processed, the IRS will refund any extra amount you paid (with interest).

Always print a copy of your completed tax return for your records, and review it carefully before e-Filing.
You will need it if you are audited by the IRS, or to amend if a TurboTax update changes your return or for any other reason,

AND, to find your AGI next year.

Unfortunately, the return has been accepted. I'll have to file a 1040-X.

There were definitely several glitches that Saw and the biggest one was that the form that was filed was a 1040. After saving and reopening the file, the form changed to a 1040-SR. That should have been part of the Review step.

Actually the form 1040 or 1040SR doesn't get filed. Only the tax data.  The form used is only for printing out.  The SR is exactly the same only larger print so it prints on 3 pages instead of 2.  Did you update your birthdate?

The birthdate was entered correctly from the start.
