I have done my daughter's taxes using Free Edition for many years, including last year, Tax Year 2021.
Today I started her Free Edition for Tax Year 2022 with same ID/password used last year.
To my surprise, all the detailed 2022 W-2 information from one of her employers (same employer as was entered in 2021 Free Edition) was already in the return that I just started working on, without any input from me, such as entering the wages amount.
I thought that TurboTax was not allowed to download W-2's without going through a validation process which included manually entering W-2 information received on a paper W-2 from an employer or electronically from an employer.
Has that changed now so that TurboTax can download W-2's from the same employer entered in a previous year return, just using the Employer ID number itself, without any manual entry of dollar figures from the W-2 for validation?
Would we still have to compare all the dollar amounts shown in the automatically downloaded 2022 W-2 with the amounts on the actual 2022 W-2 (either paper or electronic), just to confirm that the download that apparently happened with no intervention from us is correct?
Please advise.
Thanks!

If the company is a TurboTax Import Partner, you can automatically import the information. For more details on how this works, please see our Help Article.
Hi HeatherPLO-
Yes, but the automatic import has to be initiated by the customer, right?
In my case, I did not do anything to initiate the import at all, the 2022 W-2 information just appeared when started the new return for 2022 tax year.
I guess the rules now are that as long as TurboTax has the same Employer ID and your SSN from previous year return, the W-2 download happens as soon as you start a new tax year return with same employer, no entry required from customer. Is that correct?
Thanks!
