Turbo Tax Home and Office W2 creating

I am posting W2 for a small church the minister receives a parsonage deduction. The minister is by vocational (works two jobs) so we also take taxes from a portion of his check. Turbo tax won't allow me to enter 00 in box 1, 3 and 5 and place a value in box 2. Of course, the deduction for parsonage is entered under box 14.  How do I create this w2 this year? Previous versions were not an issue.

Enter one dollar in box 1, of your W-2.  This will allow you to proceed to complete your W-2 entry and will be of no consequence on your tax return.  This should also allow e-file when you are ready to file.

  1. When you get to Box 14 of the W2 entry, enter Clergy Housing in the Description box, followed by the amount. (The amount might be reported to you in a letter from the church or in your employment contract if not on your W2.) Next, classify the allowance as Other - not on the list above. Select Continue.
  2. If you get additional screens, answer those questions.
  3. When you reach the Do any of these uncommon situations apply to this W-2? screen, check the box for Religious employment, then select Continue.
  4. On the following screen, choose You earned this income for clergy employment and select Continue.
  5. Enter your allowance on the Tell Us About your Clergy Housing screen. For Qualifying Expenses, enter the lesser of:
    • Your qualified housing expenses
    • The fair rental value of your housing expenses
    • Your housing or parsonage allowance
  6. Select Continue, and on the Clergy Self-Employment Tax screen, choose the appropriate option and Continue again.

TurboTax will list this appropriately on Schedule SE for the social security and medicare taxes.  There will be no personal income tax unless the actual home expenses are greater than the housing allowance provided.

Note:  To file electronically you need the church name and EIN.  If you do not have those, then you will file by mail.

If you would like to send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information it would help.  If you would like to do this, here are the instructions:

TurboTax Online:

Open your return -Go to the menu panel on the left side of your return and select Tax Tools.

  1. Then select Tools below Tax Tools.
  2. A window will pop up which says Tools Center.
  3. On this screen, select Share my file with Agent.
  4. You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is.  Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number.
  5. Reply to this thread with your Token number and your state. This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.

TurboTax Desktop:

If you like, you can send a copy of your return that will be scrubbed to eliminate your personal data by using these steps:

  1. Click on Online in the top left menu of TurboTax CD/Download for Windows
  2. Select 'Send Tax File to Agent'
  3. Write down or send an image of your token number and state then place in this issue.
  4. We can then review your exact scenario for a solution.
  5. Please also tell us any states included in the return. This is necessary for us to view the return.

We will then be able to see exactly what you are seeing and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return and provide you with a resolution.
