TT thinks I need to file as a non-resident of my state! Yikes!

I am just beginning with filling in income sections on my TT for 2019.  I am retired and receive a pension.  I filled in all the correct information, but once I completed filling out a 1099-R from the state I live in, TT says I need to file a non-resident state return.   I don't understand at all... I have a 1099-R from California and live in California and it is the same as I have had for years.  Is this a "bug" in the software?

Make sure your home address is listed and that you have not checked the box that you lived or earned money in any other state.  If this section is not complete, that would explain the prompt.  When you have your return open, click on Personal Info at the top (My Info on the left if using TurboTax Online).

Click Edit next to these 3 sections and verify everything is correct:

  • Name - Check your state of residence and the question following about living in another state.
  • Mailing Address and Phone Number
  • Other State Income

Thank you for your prompt response.  I am still in a quandary, however, as I did receive money from another state (mineral rights) so I always have to file 2 state returns, but I do not live there and never have.  So my home address is correct, but I will have to use two different state tax returns.  I will try what you suggest, but not sure how it will pan out.  If I still have "issues" after I try this, I will let you know.  I appreciate the help here on the community forum a great deal!

Since you have mineral rights in other states, you may need to file a tax return in those states.

However, most states have a minimum income requirement before you have to file a tax return, so if you end up not owing any state tax, you should review the minimum reporting requirements for income in each state to see if you need to file a tax return.

If not, you can delete the tax return that you prepared in TurboTax.
