Upon running the final error check on my 2025 1040 joint return, I had one error. TT took me to the State Tax Return Worksheet. The message at the top of the page said the "Total Payments and Withholding" entry was smaller than the payments (estimates, extension, etc) made and that the entry needed to be at least as large as the payments actually made.
The worksheet correctly shows the refund from tax year 2021 (per the 1099-G received from the state in 2025). The taxes due line correctly shows that "0" taxes are due, since we used the standard deduction in 2021. The "Total ... " payments line on the worksheet correctly shows the amount of state taxes I paid in 2021 (number taken directly from the 2021 state tax return).
As a test, I changed the "Total ..." payments entry to $1500 more than the amount actually paid, per the 2021 state tax return, and TT Error Check still says I have one error and takes me to the same worksheet.
Is the "Total ..." entry supposed to be from the 2021 tax year? Was I supposed to use actual payments in 2020 or 2022? Of course some of the Tax Return 2021 payments were made in 2022 (January, 2022, Q4 estimate & April, 2022, Extension Request). So should I include 2022 payments as well??
What am I missing?
Thanks for your help.
