I have entered a 1099-R for a NYS Disability Pension.
Next -> TurboTax asks:
Where Is This Distribution From?
NYS & Local Employees Retirement System
(Followed by a list of 10 items with radio buttons in front of each for me to select)
The first choice in the list is US Government (including military)
I chose the 7th item: "Other Pensions of New York State and Local Governments"
Then I click on the "Continue" button.
I happen to click on the "back" button" and the first choice is selected "US Government..." and the 7th choice is no longer selected.
Since I am not of retirement age of 55, my pension is taxed until I reach 55. The state tax form seems okay (taxes my pension), however, I just want to make sure that checking the wrong item does not impact my federal return.

No. The selections on that page affect your NYS tax return. The federal taxation is based on the entry for box 2a on the 1099R.
If you click the back button the selection does move back to the top. However, once you make the correct selection and continue forward your selection registers correctly.
