The IRS rejected my 2020 baby for the recovery rebate, but accepted her for my child tax credit.

@SweetieJean - can we please not speculate and wait for @Cfaithn to respond to the questions I asked? it will be easier to get @Cfaithn  an answer that is fact-based quicker

I thank you.

Early March. So I don't think that's it. The IRS said they will send a notice as to why they rejected it. I will wait till I get that paper as TT and us determined there is no reason for that child to not get the rebate.

I don't intend on answering your specific questions as they are not relevant as to why it would get rejected.

Exactly. There is zero reason for a child to be accepted as a dependent but rejected for RR.

I received my notice. It said the SSN was wrong etc; all the generic reasons for a dependent to be rejected. None of the reasons listed were applicable. If they were applicable she would have been rejected as a dependent.

@TSOWOATNKCR did you call them to fight it? That's my intentions come next week. I'm guessing there is a flaw in their system somewhere. It should be a smoke fix.

I called. Their excuse was that because she was born in September she wasn't eligible for either stimulus in 2020. That is in direct contradiction to the text explaining eligibility. It took over 3 hours on hold over 2 days to get that crappy answer.

@Cfaithn - if you would take the time to answer the questions I posed, it may save you a phone call to the IRS; otherwise, it may give you the ammunition to explain to them what occurred.

@TSOWOATNKCR - you may want to provide me the same information that I asked @Cfaithn further up in  this thread to straighten  out the tissue with facts

this is from the IRS website (but you need facts and not flame throwing to get the result you desire):

if you click on the question it will take your to the IRS website...I only deal in facts.

A9. The first Economic Impact Payment did not include an additional amount for these children because the payment was based only on information from your 2019 or 2018 tax return. You may claim qualifying children born, adopted or placed into your foster care  in 2021 for the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit and must file a 2020 tax return to claim the credit, if eligible.

<<I don't intend on answering your specific questions as they are not relevant as to why it would get rejected>>

I just saw this and while it is your right not to post the information, it is relevant to why it would get rejected... and I will explain it with the answers to the questions.

Alternative: stay on hold with the IRS for 45 minutes and then get all wound up and not get a fact based answer.  Your call.  I am trying to help you.

On another board, there were this post:

We had a 2020 baby whom we did not receive either of the 2020 stimulus payments for (we also didn't get the 3rd stimulus payment for this child). But, it seems they allowed this child to be counted for the child tax credit.

A  second person replied:

This happened to us too and I had no luck today to fix it....agent told me we don't qualify because my child was born after the end of the tax closing date in 2020.  I told her she was wrong and I asked to speak to a manager which she said I would get a call back.

@SweetieJean thank you for looking into that. I feel so bad for people who were banking on this money based on all the information including that found on the IRS website. I will update as soon as I can what my outcome is when I contact them this coming week. As I said my child was born March of 2020 well before closing tax day so maybe I can get some answers and help others. Everyone makes mistakes and I believe the IRS has clearly made a mistake dealing with these 2020 babies.

@TSOWOATNKCR I'm sorry you got a crappy answer. I will post as soon as I find out some answers. I'm not an easy one to just push off so I will do what I can to see why they are not giving the rebate to these 2020 babies. I'd love to hear positive feedback from some people who did get credit for their 2020 baby.

@NCperson I know all the answers to your questions and I don't believe they will help you discover anything as to why they rejected the payment because I'm pretty sure there is an error in how they are handling it. All my ducks are in a row, all my boxes are properly checked, all my amounts on line 30 are there so I'm sorry but there just isn't any information you can give me based off my answers. Feel free to share what you know. There may be others that could use the information. I mean we all have access to the IRS website and I've looked through all their information. They have just hands down made an error with these 2020 babies.

@Cfaithn The IRS has lots of databases, and they do not necessarily talk to each other.  There's a similar issue with the 2019 AGI needed to efile 2020.  Many taxpayers have gotten this number directly off a transcript provided by the IRS, but then the IRS doesn't recognize it when they try to efile 2020.

In all fairness to the IRS, Congress has continued to pile task after task on the agency in a short period of time, but given them no additional funding to accomplish them.

The IRS Economic Impact Payment phone number is 800-919-9835. You can call to speak with a live representative about your stimulus check.  Be prepared to sit on hold, though. If the automated responses can't answer your questions and you'd like to talk to a live operator, you may join a long waiting list.

@Cfaithn - so what if Turbo Tax had a bug that incorrectly calculated Line 30 ]? did you consider that as possible? Are you assuming the IRS is wrong and TT is correct???

just asking ......
