Do I need to complete my federal return before my CA return or can I go in any order within the software?

The federal return should be completed as much as possible before starting on the state tax return.  The tax data from the federal return flows directly to the state return.

All state returns start from a transfer from the Federal return. You need to prepare your Federal return first and then your state return.
