If I am paper-mailing my fed. and state returns, and owe taxes, do I have to pay at the same time as I send the returns? Or can I send the returns and then pay later?

Since my wife and I are unable to e-file, I will be sending paper returns to both the federal government and to Missouri and Illinois (had partial residence in both states). Can I send my returns without the tax that I owe, and then send the owed tax later on? And if so, do I need to send the returns and checks to separate addresses or the same? TurboTax instructed me to send the check and return to the same addresses for federal and the states, but I'm pretty sure this is based on if I pay at the same time as I file, which I would rather not do.

No, as long as you submit payment before the April 17, 2018 deadline in order to avoid any penalties or interest on the tax due. If you wish to file now but pay your tax due later, you can pay your federal tax due by  visiting  www.irs.gov/Payments and choose a payment option when you are ready to do so.

If you choose to mail a paper check at a later time, you can mail the check along with the Form 1040-V payment voucher. You would mail the check and the form to the address shown on the form. The Form 1040-V payment voucher should be included with your printed tax return, you can also print the form here https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040v.pdf.

The same applies for your state payment, you would just need to pay the state taxes due prior to April 17,2018. Many states also offer the option to pay online if you prefer that method. If you would rather mail a check, there should be a payment voucher for your state included in your tax return.

You can also obtain your state's payment voucher by visiting your state Department of Revenue website. You can also pay online via this method as well. Please see the FAQ below:

Thanks so much for your help! One question, though: do I mail my returns to different addresses than if I were enclosing a payment?

You are very welcome! Yes you would typically mail your return to a different address if you are not enclosing  a payment. What state are you in?

I am in Illinois. I'll also be filing a state return for Missouri since I lived there for part of the year, and won't be enclosing payment in either of my state returns.

Here is a link with instructions on where to mail your federal return without enclosing a payment <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.irs.gov/filing/illinois-where-to-file-addresses-for-taxpayers-and-tax-professionals">htt...>. When not including a payment, you would mail you Illinois Tax return to ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE
SPRINGFIELD IL 62719-0001. For more information:<a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.revenue.state.il.us/QuestionsAndAnswers/5.htm">http://www.revenue.state.il.us/QuestionsAn...>.
