Taxpayer's State Residency Information

Part III - Taxpayer's State Residency Information

- Enter this person's state of residence as of December 31, 2022
- Check the appropriate box:

- This person is a resident of the state above for the entire year

- This person is a resident of the state above for only part of year
  - Date this person established residence in state above
  - In which state (or foreign country) did this person reside before this change?"

For example, if I was in State A from 1/1/2022 to 4/25/2022 and from 9/1/2022 to 12/31/2022. I was in Stat B from 5/1/2022 to 8/25/2022. How should I fill in the information?

TurboTax initially generated "State A, N/A, Check, 01/01/2022, State B" automatically for me and told me it did not pass the smart check asking me to review. I am confused. Should I just say "for the entire year"?

Taxpayer's State Residency Information

TurboTax is only set up to handle one change of residency, so you’ll have to adjust your residency.

Since you were a resident of State A on December 31, use that as your state of residence. You can use 9/1/2022 as your start date, or backdate it to the number of months you actually lived in State A.

Generally, the answer to this question doesn’t matter. TurboTax uses this to add states to State Taxes, and auto-fill residency dates on your state returns. You can adjust those dates when you are completing your state returns.
