You can prepare, print and mail a tax return at any time. However, you must have your W-2 or complete form 4852 as a substitute for the W-2 to mail with your tax return. The IRS will not accept your tax return without one or the other.

Here is an IRS article explaining how to get a lost W-2: https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/missing-your-w-2-heres-what-to-do

If you are able to get your W-2, you can still efile your return after entering the W-2 information.

You can print sign and mail your tax return.  If you are getting a refund there is no penalty for filing after the deadline; if you owe tax due then you will be billed by the IRS later for the penalty/interest.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS and/or your state received the return.

Wait about 4 weeks from when you mail a return and then you can check the status on the IRS site. https://www.irs.gov/refunds
