Hi is it necessary to file 2020 taxes to get the upcoming stimulus cheque?

No one knows this with certainty yet, though it is likely to be the case - but only if you would otherwise be required to file.  

This law is not yet officially "on the books", though the president is expected to sign it on Friday. Once he does it will take a little time for the IRS to set policies and procedures and implement them.  

We should all know more in a few weeks.

The bill has not yet become law, but it is certain that Taxpayers will NOT need to amend their 2020 tax returns in order to receive the third stimulus if they meet the other requirements to receive the payment.
