Why is my son's name showing on my 1040 at the top by head of household?

It depends. However, if you are not claiming your son as a dependent, because your ex is, and you have no other qualifying dependents, his name will be in that line as a qualifying individual for you to claim Head of Household. This is correct if you are the custodial parent of your son.

He is claimed by my ex however, I do have another dependent that I claim

Still, his name can be generated by the program as a qualifying dependent for HOH. Your other dependent may also qualify you, but the interview generated this entry. This does not affect your final return results.
