State tax issue / help

Hi there. Used turbo tax for years. This year I have an issue.

worked in state of Pa for 1.5 months. Maybe 4 checks. Each check paid state pa taxes.

moved to MN and worked and paid MN state taxes.

then moved from MN to Iowa in September and paid state taxes to Iowa.

with the same company.

problem is…Turbo tax keeps saying I owe thousands of taxes to the state of PA, even tho I paid state taxes to MN and was not a resident of PA and only made a few checks in Pa in 2024.

Iowa is fine. It lets me edit and put non resident. Pa turbo tax won’t let me change to non resident. So it saying I owe them taxes.

any help or ideas?  Will paying for turbo tax professional actually have someone fix this or they just give me hints?

thnx

For work, you moved to MN and then to Iowa. MN is clearly nonresident. Do you intend to return to PA and still have PA address and license, voting, etc? If so, then you are a full year PA resident and PA will tax all of your income AND give you a credit for all the double taxed income.

If you were a part-year PA resident and part year Iowa resident, then each state should only be taxing their share.

Review what you have for your resident address and review your state selection of residency. You may need to:

  1. mark a non-PA address in general info,
  2. go to PA and select part year,
  3. fill it out and
  4. then change your address back to PA in general info if you are using a friend or parent's address to be sure you get mail.

State tax issue / help

Hey there. Thanks for the quick reply.

Anyway to hire your services?

I was a life long resident of Pa.

Then in 2024 left my job in PA and hired with a company. Paid MN taxes but actually lived in Canada (USA based company) and HQ is in MN so they had me pay MN taxes. Training was in Canada with travel to and from MN.

I ended my lease in PA in 2/2024 with no plan on going back.

so a better timeline I guess.

1/2024 until 2/2024 lived and worked in Pa. Paid state taxes on all 4 paychecks.

2/2024 was pretty much “homeless” because my new company paid for hotels in multiple cities for training. But from 2/2024 until 9/2024 paid state and local taxes to MN. Where company has HQ.

Then in September I was permanently located with same company to Iowa where I started paying Iowa state taxes. Turbo tax only has be owing $40 to Iowa state.

but yeah I paid state taxes to MN from 2/2024 until 9/2024 but now it seems like they are saying I owe a double state tax to Pa? But I didn’t live or work in Pa from 2/2024 and on.

You should be a part -year resident of PA and allocate the income you earned while living there to PA. MN nonresident is perfect. Iowa part-year and allocating the income earned there.

I am guessing you have Iowa for an address in the general section. PA should be letting you change residency. Since it isn't you may have a data issue. A full or corrupted cache can cause problems in TurboTax, sometimes you need to clear your cache (that is, remove these temporary files). Try this, you may need to delete the PA - if you can.

Online version:

  1. Log out of your return and try one or more of the following:
    • Don't use Internet Explorer.
    • Clear cache and cookies,
    • Sign in using a different browser.
    • Sign in using a different device.
  2. Log back into your return.
    • Enter the information again.

Desktop version:

  1. Save your return while closing the program.
  2. Update the program
  3. Open
  4. Enter the information again.
