State return says "You reported income from S Corporations" although I did not on Federal

Friends--I have multi-state returns, and my NJ return is saying that I have reported income from an S-corp.  Not sure where it is picking this up, as I have no schedule C on my federal, and no S-corp income. The "step-by-step" instructions are hung on this step.  I cannot complete the review.

The forms seem to be fine and are registering 100% accurate.  The first section of NJ-BUS-1 is blank, as it should be, and I do have some other info on this form.

Is there a way to get past this step-by-step issue?

I have the same problem when filing my 2020 taxes. Does anyone have a solution?

The forms associated with S-Corp income are 1120-S and K-1.  There could have been an accidental tick somewhere in your interview questions that made the software think that you have these forms.  The first step I would recommend would be to see if they are present on your return and if so, delete them.

Here is how:

How do I view and delete forms in TurboTax Online?

  • Open or continue your return in TurboTax.
  • In the left menu, select Tax Tools and then Tools.
  • In the pop-up window Tool Center, choose Delete a form.
  • Select Delete next to the form/schedule/worksheet in the list and follow the instructions.

I just ran into this bug too. I can't believe it exists. 3 years later.

It's trivially easy to reproduce - I accidentally hit "S-corp" under the K-1 section, I clicked "Back" to exit it, but for some reason my NJ state return is stuck thinking I have an S-corp to report.

I don't recall hitting S-Corp anywhere along the way.  Any suggestions on how to bypass this?  Is it worth deleting the NJ state forms and starting it over again?

You need to look at your forms entered to see if you have Sch K-1 Wks-S Corporations and if you do delete it.  If you do not, you can try deleting your NJ state return and re-entering it.

To delete a specific form in TurboTax Online you can follow these steps:

  1. Within your return, click on Tax Tools in the black menu on the left side of the screen.
  2. Click on Tools.
  3. Click on Delete a Form
  4. Scroll down to your form and click Delete.
  5. Under Federal in the black menu bar click Wages & Income to get back into your tax returns.
  6. Proceed entering/reviewing your return.

To do this in TurboTax Desktop you can follow these steps:

  1. Within your return, click on the Forms icon in the upper right of the screen to switch to Forms mode.
  2. Scroll down in the menu bar on the left and select your form.
  3. Click the Delete Form button at the bottom left of the preview screen.
  4. Confirm the deletion then click the Step-by-Step icon in the upper right of the screen.
  5. Proceed entering/reviewing your return.
