This is a SOFTWARE question for TT Home & Business 2024 on a Windows PC, not a "tax" question.
SHORT: How do I remove ALL state forms (WI) from my return that is in-progress without having to uninstall TurboTax and start again from scratch?
(Please be kind: I am computer-savvy. I have used TT for a few years. But I am not a CPA. And I have never lived in or filed taxes in a state with state income tax.)
TLDR:
I live in a state without state income tax.
I made a nominal sum (less than the threshold minimum) in a state WITH income tax (WI) in 2024.
There were 2 problems: 1) TT messed up & calculated my WI tax based on my resident state income, not my WI income, resulting in a large, erroneous payment owed to WI; AND JUST AS IMPORTANT 2) I subsequently learned that I do NOT need to file a WI return for 2024 because the WI 2024 income was far below the threshold.
I tried to edit my return in the TT software to remove WI forms.
But the TT GUI (step-by-step & forms) both still show the partially deleted WI forms AND the erroneous amount due to WI.
And the return shows a bunch of red errors for those WI state forms that I cannot resolve because I don't need these state forms in the first place.
SO: I ONLY need to file my Federal return. I do NOT need to file for WI.
1) Can I somehow completely remove the WI state forms and information without having to uninstall TurboTax?
2) If so, how?
3) If not, is the only solution to completely uninstall TurboTax 2024 from my PC, delete all the "saved" 2024 forms & "leftovers", and then reinstall TT and start again from scratch???
Thank you very much for your kind assistance
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
Click on the File menu at the top left of the desktop program screen
Click on Remove State Return
This will remove the state tax return but does not affect in any way the state tax program that was downloaded and installed in the TurboTax desktop program.
That seems to have done the trick!
Thanks very much for this simple solution.
I had a feeling it might be something easy.
I just did not know where to look.
I am pretty sure you have provided the definitive solution - thank you very, very much.
If I do not return to this thread to report additional/lingering gltiches, please consider it "solved". THANKS!
