It depends on how it is reported. If the amount is reported in Box 12 Code J, it will not be considered taxable income. if the amount of disability pay show up as wage income and reflected in Boxes 1,3,and 5, then it is taxable.
The original question was "should I get a W-2 or a 1099G for long term disability payments".
My situation is I received Long Term Disability insurance payments for Oct, Nov and Dec 2024. My LTD payment was offset by my Federal SSDI payments for the 3 month same period, which I did receive a SSA-1099 for 2024. My question is should I receive a 1099 from the Disability Insurance Company for the smaller off-set amount, like the provided SSA-1099? (I also question the reference to 1099G, as I thought that was for unemployment.)
Thank You,
LJS
Yes. You should receive a 1099 form from your Disability Insurance Company for the amount of Long Term Disability (LTD) payments you received, even if they were offset by your Federal Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) payments. The form you receive from the Disability Insurance Company is typically a 1099-MISC or 1099-R, depending on the nature of the payments and the policy.
The SSA-1099 form you received from the Social Security Administration reports the SSDI payments you received. The 1099-G form is indeed used for reporting unemployment compensation and certain other government payments, so it wouldn't apply to your LTD payments.
