Same smart-check Error regarding 8606 Line 7 as 2020's glitch.

Last year there was a glitch regarding the form 8606 and the Smart Check Error IRA Contributions WorkSheet: Line 87 Taxpayer's excess traditional IRA contribution credit should not be more than zero.

This was solved with a patch late last year, but it's back this year, and I cannot file due to the smart check error.

Essentially I've had a non-deductible contribution that I've been carrying over for a number of years and have been filing an 8606 for this small amount every year.  The last couple of years this has been giving me grief.  The articles are here:

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/retirement/discussion/re-how-to-enter-roth-ira-excess-carried-forw...

Is this a known issue again for 2021?

Thanks!

Same smart-check Error regarding 8606 Line 7 as 2020's glitch.

We'll automatically generate and fill out Form 8606 (Nondeductible IRAs) if you reported any of these on your tax return:

  • Nondeductible contributions made to a traditional IRA
  • Distributions from a traditional, SEP or SIMPLE IRA that had nondeductible contributions (excluding rollovers, conversions, recharacterizations, qualified charitable distributions, one-time distribution to fund an HSA, or return of certain contributions)
  • Conversions from a traditional, SEP, or SIMPLE IRA to a Roth IRA
  • Distributions from a Roth IRA (other than rollovers, recharacterizations, or a return of certain contributions)

If none of these apply, you will not get Form 8606, as you don't need to file one every year.

You could delete Form 8606 from your return.

Thanks for your reply!

I do need to file the 8606 so deleting it is not an option.  My goal is for the smart check to not interfere and raise an error when it appears there is no error.

Also have tried to remove and re-create the 8606 by conducting the IRA interview process.

Thank you!

Same smart-check Error regarding 8606 Line 7 as 2020's glitch.

I got the same error and it spit out a 8606; when my IRA deduction was actually tax deductible.  My bank let me refund since I had not filed my taxes; and then when I went back to complete, it told me I could have saved money by contributing to an IRA; what a bunch of hooey!!!
