I lost my 2022 tax files that I already filed due to my laptop crashed. I have the pdf file from 2022 and was wondering if I can retrieve my tax files (.txt) with the pdf file on my new computer. Thank you.

If you used desktop software downloaded/installed from a CD to your own computer, then the tax files are stored locally on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive. They are not stored online. If you cannot recover them due to a hard drive failure, etc. you can get a free transcript from the IRS or for a fee of $43, an actual copy of your tax return.

The tax data file does not end in .txt. They end in .tax2022, .tax2021 etc. They can only be opened by the Desktop installed program. Why did your laptop crash? Maybe the hard drive is ok and you can take it out to access the files on it. You can't open the pdf file in the program or convert a pdf file into the .tax2022 file.
If you used the Online version you can download the pdf and .tax2022 files again to the new computer.
How do you have the pdf file if the laptop crashed? Did you make backups? Have you searched for the .tax2022 file? Did you get the 2022 program installed and activated on the new computer?
