So, we took the distribution from IRA (qualified disaster relief situation) in 2020. When we filed for years 2020, 2021, and 2022 we chose to have the tax split it over those three tax years. Those years of filing is done and was done properly (using the various 8915 forms).
I am getting started on 2023 taxes, and of course the question comes up, and even despite selecting we don't have any repayments owed, Turbotax is still adding this amount in as income on the state return, showing we still have to pay taxes on it. This is false. We already did that. Something needs to be updated.

See if you have a 2022 Form 1099-R that was transferred over to the 2023 return.
Click on Forms. When in Forms mode if there is a 1099-R listed, open the form scroll down and click on Delete Form.
See if that corrects the problem
And...There may also have been a Form 8915-F transferred over. If there is a 8915-F then open and delete that form.
Thank you for your advice. I went in to delete the 1099-R, and it took me a minute to find the forms view, as it shows up under tools now, but when I went into the "delete a form" option, I saw the 1099-R, and then I saw the two 8915 forms as well, which I removed. Then I saw your newly added comment about the 8915's so it worked out perfectly. With all three of those removed, it solved the problem. Thank you so much for all your help! What a great community, here 🙂
I'm having the same issue. I can't seem to find the forms section nor the "more" or tax tools options. Can you guide me to where this is located?

Which TurboTax program are you using, online or desktop?
If you are using the TurboTax desktop software installed on your personal computer, which operating system are you using, Windows or Mac?
I am finding this same exact thing happening to me I’ve already paid the taxes on my distribution over that past 3 years, so I entered all my income and it says I owe $4000!!
I almost passed out!
Im glad to see that you got it resolved…BUT
I don’t have the desktop version of Turbo Tax I’m just using the App, so is there any other way to remove these forms to reflect the proper income information ?
thanks
The Form 8915-F Worksheet and the Form 8915-F along with the Form 1099-R were transferred from the 2022 tax return and need to be deleted. There may also be a "Qualified Disaster Retirement Plan Distributions" listed that has to be deleted.
Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen
Click on Tools
Click on Delete a form
I'm using the mobile app version.
I would recommend signing into turbotax.com on the web browser on your phone and access it that way. I couldn't get to it in the app either. You don't need a desktop and every phone has a browser. When your list comes up asking what you want to work on, click on any of them. Then, on the left hand menu, you will see a list of everything you can work on. At the bottom of the list, you will see "Tax Tools" which brings up a drop-down. Then, click on "Tools" and it will pop up a window where you click on "Delete a form"... see my image below
It works great 🙂
Oh thank you so much!!! I went on my Chromebook to do this and it worked perfect!
just make sure you delete the 2020 disaster distribution form also…now it says I’m getting $506 refund!! Woohoo!!
