I received a message on the IRS site that my filing had been received. Then a few weeks later, i needed verification of identity. Did that fine. Kept waiting. Next the message on “wheres my refund” said it was under review and there was information about an appeal. I called, they said it was under review and it could take several more months. I should review my taxes for mistakes-which i did. No letters asking for more information.
Our taxes are pretty simple. Income from social security, and ITA distribution and we took the standard deduction.
Did i do something wrong? How do i prevent this from happening again next year?

You probably didn't do anything wrong. It could be that the IRS has different information on file than what you reported and it just has to be verified.
Once your return is filed, TurboTax has no control over the processing of your return or the release of your refund.
Here are a couple FAQs to track your refund:
When will I get my federal tax refund?
How do I track my state refund?
Why does Where's My Refund say "approved" but TurboTax still says "accepted"?
Why do some refunds take longer than others?
What if my IRS refund is taking longer than 21 days?
