This is an issue in TurboTax Online that is being investigated.
It's possible that there are forms in your Federal and/or state returns that are not yet finalized and ready for efiling. If you are in North Carolina, then the NC forms are expected to be available 2/24/2022. If you are in another state, you can check the state forms availability using the state table below.

If you are awaiting availability of state forms, then if you wish, you can efile the Federal return now (if all your Fed forms are available) and efile the state return later. To do that, you would need to temporarily change the filing method for the state return and tell TurboTax that you intend to "mail" the state return. Then when the state forms are available you can switch the method back to efile.
The free version is not giving me the option to select Federal or State to file. It only asks if I want to E-file. Generally you can select to efile Federal or State or both. The Free Live Basic Version is not giving this option. It is automatically selecting both Federal and State. How can I get around this to file the Federal only?
Please see this Turbo Tax FAQ for assistance.
Thank you! Been trying to file for days. They could have said that they are waiting for state forms to be finalized, but they just left left a vague message with no clarification. I've been trying to contact them to no avail. You are a class act. Thanks!

You're welcome. Good luck.
Even you select federal or state, or both it doesnt allow you e-file . turbotax is horrible company, they have charged me but they dont answer phone calls, they dont have live chat .....
Same thing, but I got an email stating the forms were ready and I could file. But it is still not allowing me.

Are you referring to a North Caroline return? Unfortunately that TurboTax email concerning NC forms was premature and incomplete. It should have stated that the NC forms were only available at that time for printing purposes. Efiling of NC forms is projected to be available on 2/24/2022.

You are so right. I have tried so many times to efile just the Federal and it will not go through. I did a live chat with a Turbotax person and the person could not even understand what I was trying to tell her. I finally had to share my screen with her. Then tells me it's because forms aren't ready to which I asked what forms and she couldn't tell me. I already knew NC wasn't available. I was trying to get help to efile the Federal only. I was told to contact the IRS. I asked if it would be a software issue with Turbotax and she said no....go figure....I know others who efiled their Federal returns using Turbotax online with no problems. So obviously something has happened and I don't think it's with IRS.
That still doesn't work. Even if you select efile Federal only and mail state the Federal return will not go through :(
