My wife filled out her W4 for withholding at a higher single rate yet when we got her W2 this year the amount of federal taxes withheld is no where near what should have been withheld at a single rate but is more closely to the married rate. Is there any way to check to make sure the W4 was filled out correctly and that things were withheld correctly and if they weren't is there any remedy as it puts us in a hole for taxes this year when we thought we would have had enough withheld.

You can check, and update (fill out new Forms W-4) your withholding by using the IRS Online Withholding Estimator, and/or TurboTax's W-4 Calculator. See:
TurboTax W-4 Withholding Calculator
As for any remedy, if you can show that your employer did not withhold according to what was on the W-4 filed with them, you could use that to get the IRS to waive penalties and interest for underpayment, but there is no way to get the amount of your tax liability reduced - that is not dependent upon withholding.
