Your niece should qualify as a dependent based on the information you provided:
- she would not be a qualifying child of anyone else
- she is related to you
- you provided more than half of her support
- her income is under $5,050
- she's not filing a joint tax return
You want to be sure you answered all of the questions about your niece correctly so that she's added to your return. Review all of your answers.
One common mistake I see in these situations is on the Less common situations screen. Make sure the box that says Paid for more than half of their living expenses and other support is not checked. This refers to your niece paying half of her own support.
If that doesn't work and all of the other detail you've entered for your niece, we can take a look at the return to see what you see and try to find the solution. The copy of the return that we receive is sanitized so it wouldn't show any personal information.
Log into your TurboTax Online account and click on Pick up where I left off. Then,
- on the left hand panel, click on Tax Tools and then choose Tools
- on the pop up window, select Share my file with Agent
- you'll see a message explaining that you will be providing a diagnostic copy of your return - your personal details will be changed so we will not be able to see any private information
- click okay and you'll get another message with a token
Reply to this message with your token and we'll take a look to see what we can find.
