Why doesn't 2020 downloaded PDF show all the bookmarks my 2019 return did?

I upgraded in 2020 because it seemed I had to in order to add a 1099 for contractor work I did.  It seems to be missing information.

Well, it could possibly be one of a couple of things.  I don't know from your brief info if you mean that only "some" of your bookmarks are not present or whether there are no bookmarks at all showing the return contents.

If "some" bookmarks are there, then perhaps your 2020 return is just a PDF of the basic return without the worksheets, while the 2019 is a larger PDF with all the worksheets.   If that's the case, we can tell you how to get a larger PDF of your 2020 return with all the worksheets, which is good to have for your records anyway.

Or are you saying that there are no bookmarks present at all in the PDF--that there is no list of the contents?   If so, see if this image explains what you are experiencing.   Maybe it is collapsed.  I made this image with the PDF opened by Adobe Reader.

Please tell me how to do the larger download of 2020 pdf. I'm really frustrated...I need the retirement 1099s for a refi and don't see them. Yet TT said I needed to upgrade because of a law change for contractor work. I worked a couple of months in 2019, so the upcharge on TT negated my earnings...now I can't find all my info.

After a return has been efiled and  accepted, it can sometimes take a return PDF a while to update and become available at the Tax Home.   If you can't use the Download/print button at the Tax Home or the "Download/print the PDF" link in the section "Your Tax Returns & Documents", or if you're getting incomplete documents when you use one of those methods, here's an alternate way to print by opening the filed return back up to print at the Print Center.

NOTE:  When you open your return back up, do not make any changes in it if it's already been filed.  If you later have to amend the return, it has to start off exactly as it was when it was originally filed.

  • Log in and at the Tax Home or in the section "Your Tax Returns & Documents" for 2020, look for a link "Add a State."
  • Click on "Add a State."  (you don't really add one.  That's just to open your return back up.)
  • After the return is open, click in the left menu column on TAX TOOLS, then PRINT CENTER.
  • Then choose "Print, save, view this year's return."
  • The next screen should offer some options:  "Just my tax returns", or "include government worksheets (optional)", or "include government and TurboTax worksheets (optional.)"
  • See if one of those PDFs has what you need.  The latter has the most pages.

NOTE:  Remember all PDF tax documents and tax data files are very sensitive files, since they contain your personal ID info, financial data, and possibly bank account numbers, etc.  Be sure to store them safely and securely to guard against computer theft, hacking, etc.

I NEED A COPY OF MY W-2  (or 1099)

TurboTax does not have a copy of your W-2—the Wage & Tax Statement—issued to you by your employer, (nor does TurboTax have copies of your 1099’s).   You should always save those documents for your own records. You could ask the employer(s) for copies or you can get a copy from Social Security (for a fee of $90).

To get a copy of a W-2 from Social Security https://faq.ssa.gov/en-us/Topic/article/KA-02501

https://www.irs.gov/help-resources/tools-faqs/faqs-for-individuals/frequently-asked-tax-questions-an...

If you saved a pdf of your completed tax return, the worksheets will show the W-2 information you entered, but not the actual W-2.

You can get a wage and income transcript from the IRS:  It will not show the actual W-2, 1099’s, etc, but will show the income information the IRS received.  It will not, however, show your state information. It will only show the federal information.

Or you can pay the IRS $50 for an actual copy of your tax return which will include copies of your W-2’s
