Why can't I copy/paste passwords into the import brokerage logon screen?

Please fix this.  I use a password manager with long complex passwords.  Trying to type them in by hand...when I can't even see what I've typed...is beyond frustrating.  This failure on TurboTax's part makes everything much less secure.

My guess is that Intuit thinks they are improving security by doing this.  They're wrong--this weakens security of course.  People have been complaining about it for years.  Here's how you work around it:

  • Install and run AutoHotKey (free): https://www.autohotkey.com/
  • Create a file (I call mine "Intuits Super Awesome No Paste Feature.ahk") with an ".ahk" extension.
  • Edit the file in notepad and paste the following:
#NoEnv ; Recommended for performance and compatibility with future AutoHotkey releases.
; #Warn ; Enable warnings to assist with detecting common errors.
SendMode Input ; Recommended for new scripts due to its superior speed and reliability.
SetWorkingDir %A_ScriptDir% ; Ensures a consistent starting directory.
^+v::Send {Raw}%clipboard%
  • Double-click the .ahk file you just created.  This will activate the script.

Now, when you copy a password, you can ctrl-shift-v (instead of just ctrl-v) and this will "type" whatever is in the clipboard (your password).

I keep the .ahk in my taxes folder since I seem to need to use this every year I use TurboTax (which is no longer every year).

Why can't I copy/paste passwords into the import brokerage logon screen?

@AkinaLO Since you are an Intuit employee, could you please post the name and contact information (email and phone number) of the misguided individual(s) that is responsible for this decision so that the frustrated user base can contact them directly and point out the error in their logic?

Why can't I copy/paste passwords into the import brokerage logon screen?

@deanord, thanks for posting the autohotkey script again.  Seems we have to do it every year.  The last couple of years I had to change the hot key combo used from the one you posted:

^+v::Send {Raw}%clipboard%

 The full list of modifiers is here: https://www.autohotkey.com/docs/Hotkeys.htm#Symbols, ^+v means control-shift-v and is already used by Windows 10 and 11 ("paste plain text") and, apparently, blocked by Intuit along with a regular paste.  I use:

^|v::Send {Raw}%clipboard%

control+alt+v but you can change the characters before the :: to any combination you like to work round Windows or app changes.

Excellent.  Thank you.

Why can't I copy/paste passwords into the import brokerage logon screen?

I'm having this problem again this year. WHY?!?

This is highly annoying and does nothing to improve security. In fact it lessens the security and convivence.

@DonnaLO

Would you please have someone look into this for the next tax season?

Or explain why it's not working?

When I copy from password LastPass it fails.

I can copy username from LastPass.

I can copy checking account and routing number

Why not allow the password?

Why can't I copy/paste passwords into the import brokerage logon screen?

WHY:

Because YOU did not read all the previous posts and because YOU did not install autohotkey as documented, multiple times.

Sorry to be bad horse-donkey-offspring about this, but live with it or change it.  The way you change it is simple - you vote, you organise, you work body and sole to change the control corporate interests exert over your own tax system.  Or you just do what has been documented before and install auto-hot-key.

You might also realize that the TurboTax download of brokerage information is not something you want to do; see the previous posts.  You don't have to download it and, most likely, since it records every single thing you did in your brokerage account last year, you do not want to do this.  Just enter the aggregate information, as the excellent information provided by the few remaining employees of the IRS tell you quite clearly (it is actually in the text of the form you are filling in).

I have decided to temporarily change my passwords to "IntuitDoesNotCareAboutRealSecurity"

Why can't I copy/paste passwords into the import brokerage logon screen?

Seriously, completely seriously.  Do not do that.  Just use the published solutions.  Assuming that you can make a difference by changing a password to a political statement does not make a political statement and it does not fix the problem.  It may feel righteous, it may even be so, but it does not help anyone.

Darn.  It's that time of year again.  It happens every year.  We've Gotta Get Out Of This Place.  The Animals were certainly not the last to sing this.  We sing this and will keep singing it; there is a better life.

Why can't I copy/paste passwords into the import brokerage logon screen?

I did not read all of the in between post because 8 pages is a bit much.

I had read about the autohotkey software, but I will not install some unknown product for this single use case.

Sigh, I should know better. Can't just download the tax documents. That would be too simple.

I'll stick with just entering the info then. Thanks for the help, even if it was a bit snarky.

Seriously, Thank you, I didn't realize it would download all of the brokerage info, so that is option is now out.

Why can't I copy/paste passwords into the import brokerage logon screen?

This will likely be pulled by TT but I just completed my taxes using HR Block's software. It was less expensive and I was able to paste my brokerage account password. The software is easier to use as well with less annoying prompts. I was especially glad that it didn't ask me a dozen times if I was sure I didn't want to purchase the state tax for the low, low price like TT. My state doesn't have income taxes. It has some flaws, but I am gone from intuit forever.

Why can't I copy/paste passwords into the import brokerage logon screen?

Once again, adding to the chorus of complaints that this really should be built in functionality, not something requiring custom scripiting.

Why can't I copy/paste passwords into the import brokerage logon screen?

Yeah.  Such a simple thing.  I just bought HR Block.  Was cheaper as well.

Why can't I copy/paste passwords into the import brokerage logon screen?

It's like we need to comment here every day until they fix this. what a joke.

Why can't I copy/paste passwords into the import brokerage logon screen?

This has gone on for years. There have been hundreds of complaints.
They are not going to fix it. Not sure why. Sales must be so good that they aren't bothered by the complaints.
We either have to live with it or, as many have done, switch to a different product.
