Simplest way is to pay the extra 1/3 as another estimated payment with your tax return when you file.  Then request on the return that the excess payment not be refunded but carried over to the following year.  That way the IRS has it paid as 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 and you are able to pay it all a year early.  Although why anyone would want to pay a tax before it is due, I don't quite understand....

Maybe so we don't end up in the same situation next year (although depending on the content of next year's 8915 it may not prevent the need for doing an 8915 next year even if you do pay off all the owed taxes this year).

When will the 2021 8915-f form be available on Turbo Tax to efile?

Hi, I’m having the same issue. Do we receive another form in the mail that needs to be entered in? I only had the one I received in 2020, not sure where it’s filed currently, so I don’t have a physical paper document for 2021 taxes. I verified that I selected 1/3 disbursement payments.

As of March 1, TurboTax is still showing

“Have you taken a disaster distribution before2021?” YES

“IS it for Covid related disaster disbursement for 2020” select YES if you planned on doing 1/3 payments.
“ You’ll need to revisit this area. Unfortunately changes related to disbursement are not ready.” …it doesn’t explain anything.

@Anonymous

“I think it shows a lack of class to come to a company’s website and use THEIR resources to drive their own business away.”

No, Nobody is driving no one’s businesses here. In fact, opposite is true…! From posters in this forum, it appears that most of the TT customers are not satisfied by TT approach to 8915-F form this year. This is a signal to TT to do better hopefully as soon as this year and continue on in the future.

 “AND I think it jeopardizes these forums, a place where most of us come to discuss and help each other out with their taxes.”

No again…! Nothing will happen to this forum. In fact, it is to advantage of TT to keep the forum going so people can express their opinion so TT can improve their products and strategy…!

 “If you don't like TurboTax go on social media and say something, not here.  This thread should be a dozen posts long, tops.”

Why..?! Freedom of expression and speech is the constitutional right of every citizen in this country. Why the forum needs to be short…?!

 “If you want to bad mouth and drive away business, go somewhere else and have at it.”

Wrong…! Expressing your opinion is not going to bankrupt the multi-billion dollar TurboTax industry, or for that matter any other fortune 500 industry. Show me one company that went bankrupt because of its customer’s community forum…!

 “It is not Intuits fault that the IRS code is byzantine and that requires a billion dollar tax preparation industry to navigate.”

 Wrong again…! You cannot totally blame the IRS….! It is true IRS was late since historically all forms for the current tax year should be completed by the end of that year December.. But how do you explain other tax companies such as efile.com, FreeTaxUSA, TaxSlayer, etc., jump on the form as soon as it was available and  already incorporated the form into their software as early as mid-February and TT has Not Yet…???!

When will the 2021 8915-f form be available on Turbo Tax to efile?

It’s showing that the forms are no longer in draft mode on the irs site, however TurboTax is still not updated as of March 1

When will the 2021 8915-f form be available on Turbo Tax to efile?

@BarryGraham

I could see that.  Kinda.  This form replaces all the other 8915's and its sole purpose is to handle the run out of the various programs.  Once programmed and installed there wouldn't be this problem with respect to this form and its predecessors.

When will the 2021 8915-f form be available on Turbo Tax to efile?

The changes that have taken place in the last two tax seasons is unprecedented and it's been challenging in every way for the IRS as well taxpayers and software developers.  This form will be used for anyone who chose to take a distribution from their retirement and spread the taxable amount over three years.

The IRS did recently (about a week or so ago) take the Form 8915-F out of draft and finalized it for tax year 2021.  TurboTax has the form available on March 31, 2022. Continue to check this link to see if the date changes.

When will the 2021 8915-f form be available on Turbo Tax to efile?

I think a lot of the people complaining are angry about how long it is taking for turbo tax to make this form available. It says on the link that,  "we need a few days to make the forms available for use in TurboTax." The form has been available for a few weeks now and the only update that has been made is to ask the question if you had a distribution and tell you the form is not ready yet. Other tax prep services have it available so why doesn't turbo tax? I bought the desktop software like a fool and have been ready to file but can't. The only information they are giving is a date of March 31.

When will the 2021 8915-f form be available on Turbo Tax to efile?

Looking through all the comments on this subject, it appears most of the concerns are about spreading the tax liability over three years and the delay in having the 8915-F form available. The concern I have is waiving the 10% penalty for year 2021 like they allowed for 2020. The form on the IRS site clearly states in the instructions that it is not to be used for coronavirus:

"Coronavirus-related distributions. You can only report qualified disaster distributions for disasters listed in item C. Coronavirus-related distributions can’t be made in 2021."

Does anyone know if this might change? It is a huge impact for someone furloughed due to the pandemic to now have to pay the 10% penalty for taking out money they needed to survive.
