If you submitted your information through the non-filer system prior to completing your return, that is what has caused the problem with the duplicate filing. If you did not, then you may have a more serious issue with identity theft.
When using the non-filer system on the IRS website, your information is processed by the IRS as an original filed return.
Any subsequent filing submitted electronically will be rejected and must be mailed to the IRS for processing.
You can do this in a couple of different ways:
Don't forget that when you mail a paper return to the IRS, you must include copies of your W-2s and 1099s, plus you need to sign and date the return.
Internal Revenue Manual 21.5.3.4 General Claims procedures states that ‘an informal written inquiry that includes everything necessary to input a correct adjustment’ will be processed.
I recently filed my taxes with turbo tax. Now, I am trying to file my son’s taxes with Turbo Tax. When I try to e-file…I receive a message stating taxes have already been submitted for the SSN of my son. What should I do to find out what’s wrong?
Did you claim him as a dependent on your return? Make sure on his return to check the box that says he can be claimed on someone else's return. It's under My Info, Click Edit by his name and scroll down to #3.
My son is not claimed as my dependent. I am just helping him file his tax returns. How do I check to see if there has been identity fraud?
There's no way to find out. He will have to mail it this year and let the IRS sort it out. Someone else may have accidentally typed his ssn by mistake.
