My spouse and I have no dependents so we both claim zero.  On my W4 form I check  the spouse works box.  Should we both check that box  or does it cover it with only one of us checking that box?  It causes a significant amount more to be deducted from my check just in federal taxes, but I would prefer not to owe at the end of the year.

If you are both working  you both want to check box 2 (c) on W4. The reason more is being withheld is because you are going to jointly file a tax return with the  the combined income. The spouse with the higher income may want to fill out steps 2 , 3 and 4. If when filing your tax at the end of year and too much or too little was withheld you can adjust W4. Form W4 and Take home pay
