How do I select on w2....head of household...one dependent. I don't want to pay back when filing. I'm looking for a great return.

Hi! You can indicate your filing status of Head of Household by checking the box in Step 1 (c). Step 3 allows you to enter the number of dependents that you plan to claim at year end. The amount that you will multiply by depends on whether or not the dependent is a qualifying child.

Rules for Dependents

If you are looking for a larger return at year end, you can elect to claim zero dependents to have more withheld from your paycheck each period.

Hello,

When completing your W4 (Employee's Withholding Certificat) the information to select filing status will be section one item c.  The dependent selection is in step 3.  Once these items are completed based on your tax situation your employer has sufficient information to calculate the proper check withholdings.  Have a great day!

@Melanie27  you would need to fill out a new W4 form.

Fill out the information in Step 1 and choose head of household.

If your dependent is a child under the age of 17 you would fill in the top line of Step 3.

If your dependent is a parent or child 17 and older you would fill in the second line in Step 3.

We have a useful tool to help estimate what your withholding should be and it will assist you on how to fill out your W4.
