@mcullen3 On your 1099R, anything in box 14? If not then leave boxes 14, 15 & 16 all blank, no spaces. If you have withholding in box 14 then enter the amount from box 2a into box 16 for the state distribution. If box 2a is blank use the amount from box 1.
As long as I enter "14 State tax withheld amount" from 1099 into Turbotax 1099 and follow the suggestions I still get "State tax shouldn't be greater than gross distribution. I should mention that the Gross Distribution is the sum of box 4 and box 14 i.e. allocated all to Federal and State tax.
Do you have an amount in box 16 for state distribution? If not then enter the amount from box 1 in box 16.
I am having the exact same issue. Have you found a solution?
If the error is because the the state distribution amount is blank on the 1099-R screen, go back to the 1099-R in TurboTax and then enter the amount shown in Box 1 in Box 16 for the state distribution. This should clear the error.
