Smart Check: Form 5329-S "Foreign country code should have a value"

TurboTax won't let me file my taxes, because during the Smart Check I keep getting the following errors:

- Form 5329-S "Foreign country code should have a value.  Select the applicable foreign country code from the list provided."

- Form 5329-T "Foreign country code should have a value.  Select the applicable foreign country code from the list provided."

- Form 8606-S "Foreign country code should have a value.  Select the applicable foreign country code from the list provided."

- Form 8606-T "Foreign country code should have a value.  Select the applicable foreign country code from the list provided."

I did not live or work outside the United States, so I have no idea why TurboTax keeps asking me for a foreign country code.  I'm not sure which part of the TurboTax entries these errors are referring to either.  Help!

- Federal Information Sheet "Foreign country code should have a value.  Select the applicable foreign country code from the list provided."

One of the 1099-Rs that you entered has a box checked that says that it is foreign income.  You need to find that 1099-R and delete it and re-enter it.  If you can't figure out which 1099-R has the error in it then delete them all and re-enter them all.

I am running into the same problems. TT won't let me file until I enter the foreign address (which I don't have). I tried to delete and re-enter my 1099-R information, but it's no help. Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

I eventually solved it by choosing a different state (Indiana), and then choosing my state (Minnesota).  Once I did that, then for whatever reason TurboTax stopped listing my country as Italy and instead listed it correctly as Minnesota, USA.  I was then able to file without any issues.

Re: bmyers87, thank you for your suggestions! Need some additional clarification... Did you change your state in the "Personal Information" page to correct this problem? I tried that and it didn't work for me.  :(

I just logged out of TT completely and restarted the program. Then, I went in to resubmit my return for e-filing and it went through this time (I did this before and it didn't work). I am not sure what happened? I speculate it might be something with the TT server side (as nothing has changed on my side).

I have the same problem and followed your instructions (deleting the 1099-R's) but again when I'm ready to transmit the return I get the same error message. What else can i try? Thanks.

I had the same problem, which was arose from having tried to create a new Roth IRA in 2021 before a salary increase put income over the $140,000 limit. Getting out of that mess required transferring the money in the Roth IRA into a Traditional IRA early this year, and turning that back into what's called a "backdoor Roth," on the advise of an advisor. The instructions I was given for that did not work, and I came to the "foreign country code should have a value" roadblock.  After almost giving up, I tried quitting and re-opening the return and  found myself trying to fix another problem in a 1099-R which lacked an entry in Line 7. Instructions there explained that sometimes Line 7 is not filled out, and listed a large number of possible entries. I picked code 5, which mentioned disallowed activity). Doing that satisfied Turbotax, and I was able to get through the return without an error.

Sorry I can't give clear instructions, but this is like trying restart a stalled car; you try a number of things and by the time it starts running you've lost track of exactly what you did. The process asked me to refill entries in a 1099-R and when I did I noticed errors in spelling of the street and town. so that may have played a role. The download version of Turbotax Home and Business included help that helped me.
