Should a dependent college student file return with only 1098-T?

Hello,

I filed tax return 2019 and have my son as dependent. He is a full time college student with no income. The only form he has is 1098-T which I already entered into my tax return.

He also received State refund on last year tax return 2018. Does he need to file the tax return this year? If yes, he cannot enter 1098-T because I already entered it into my return. Am I right?

Thanks for your advice!

The form 1098-T is an informational form and it is possible to use it on more than one return.  However, unless he has taxable scholarship that is reported on the form, he doesn't need to file because of the form.

Thanks SusanY1.

Does that mean: if my son has 1098-T that has amount on Box 5 (Scholarship....) then he MUST file the return and must enter this form even though I already entered it on my return? His Box 5 has $1,700.
