SALT deduction error

At least for Idaho filers, I found that going into the forms directly and modifying the calculation for line 14 works to correct this issue and does not block electronic filing. It is obviously up to you on whether to try this or wait for Turbo Tax to complete their updates.

(1) Go to View -> Forms

(2) Select Idaho Form 40

(3) Go to the worksheet for line 14 - "State And Local Income or General Sales Taxes Worksheet"

(4) Override line e in the worksheet to match Federal Schedule A, line 5e

(5) Double-check that the calculation matches the Idaho instructions

This is obviously a work-around, so, again, your call on whether to try this or wait.

SALT deduction error

I keep seeing comments about going to “View->Forms” but I can’t seem to find it. I’m using the online version and not Desktop. Are the Forms only available on the Desktop version?

Also with the online version there are no flags that suggest there are any updates to the Idaho calculations pending. It feels as if TT wants me to file an inaccurate return.

@Ptmmryan Yes, forms view is only available in the desktop software; you will not be able to override values in TTO (and this is not recommended, generally). Also, you scared me for a moment, so I went into TurboTax Online to verify that the warning screen does appear; it's this one, the second screen in the state return interview:

Once this page has been cleared, you will be able to complete and file your Idaho state return. Thank you for your patience.

I am still seeing the message posted from MelissaS1 on March 14. The bullets at the bottom says to 1.  wait for updates or 2. File a return with a known error and amend later.

Are you saying the updates have been made?  Maybe I’n just not refreshing my TTO properly?

I really want to file a correct return the first time, that’s why I was checking on the update timeline.

No, there has been no confirmed update indicating that the SALT fix has been rectified. If your software still shows the same behavior, it likely means the update has not been released, not that you failed to refresh TurboTax Online.

The updates in TurboTax online will occur automatically, so you do not need to update them manually. Updates happen each Thursday so check back after next Thursday to see if the update has been made.

Just checking in.  Has TT addressed this issue yet, if not is there any sense of when an update will be released?  Message does not address incorrect Idaho State tax calculation if using itemized Schedule A on Federal return.

Waiting to file. Can’t file Federal until Idaho State return is ready. I’m stuck.

SALT deduction error

I logged on this afternoon and my Idaho state taxes are now calculating correctly for the new SALT limitation amount for files who itemize. I had previously filed my Federal taxes and this afternoon I filed my Idaho taxes.

It does now calculate correctly but for some reason it did not populate line 15 of Idaho Form 40 which is line 13-line 14. That calculation doesn’t make a difference in my case as line 15 is smaller than the standard deduction on line 16. TT is correctly using the standard deduction.

I’m good to go.

Thanks!

SALT deduction error

I am having the same issue here in NJ and missing out on an additional 8K of deduction and am unable to get through to anyone at Intuit to resolve. The system does not seem to calculate the "phase out" and just blanket caps at 10k.

The deduction calculation is not taking into account all of NJ taxes withheld.  It defaults to standard deduction even if y NJ taxes are more.  I can't even see Schedule A - i guess it does not generate one if std deduction is assumed ?  - please fix and let me know how to fix

Update- I confirmed this is a glitch. The graphic says capped at 10k but when going through the final review I can see the SALT deduction broken down with 17k listed. Very frustrating as this added hours to my filing.
