return year

I tried to file my 2022 tax return but mistakenly got filed for 2023. The return got rejected IND-452 which happened because I already filed my 2023 taxes. How do I change the filing year or do I need to amend it

Stop.    The online software is only for 2023 returns.   If you used online for 2022, that return is all wrong and you are very lucky that it was rejected.    Do not do anything else to try and file it.   If you have 2023 income information to enter, you can very carefully and slowly edit the return and use your 2023 information instead.

The only way to prepare and file a 2022 return is to use downloaded 2022 software on a full PC or Mac and then print and mail that return -- it cannot be e-filed.

You cannot change the tax year.   The current online program is for 2023 only.   Only a 2023 return can be prepared online and only a 2023 return can be e-filed.

Online preparation and e-filing for 2020, 2021, and  2022 is permanently closed.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

To file a return for a prior tax year

 If you need to prepare a return for 2020, 2021, or 2022  you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

There is nothing to amend because the tax return that you tried to file was rejected. You cannot amend a tax return that has not been filed.

You cannot amend the tax return that you created in TurboTax Online. You have to start over from scratch in the 2022 CD/Download software, as xmasbaby0 described.

ANNND....if you used the same "Online" account you already used to file your 2023 taxes?????

Then you have irreversibly overwritten your 2023 tax file....and it is not recoverable.  So hope you had previously downloaded that earlier 2023 PDF tax file so you have a record of it.

ANND #2:  If you did overwrite your 2023 tax file with 2022 data, then next year, you'll have to NOT transfer the tax file into the 2024 software...or it will all be the wrong year's data (unless you now return and recreate your 2023 file exactly as it was originally filed).

If instead you created a new "Online" account, to attempt to create and file 2022....then you can abandon that account, and never return to it.
