No - You can enter a total for each category on Form 8949 and then mail a copy of your statements within 3 days of filing.

To do this in Turbo Tax:

  1. Go to Wages & Income

  2. Select I'll choose what I work on.

  3. In the Investment Income section, click Start/ Update by Stocks, Mutual Funds, Bonds, Other.

  4. Choose I'll type it in myself.

  5. On the Tell us about...screen, select I'll enter a summary for each sales category.

  6. Continue through the screens.

Yes and No.  Yes to the summary version worked great.  However, the : "NONCOVERED SECURITIES WITH UNDETERMINED HOLDING PERIOD"  INVESTMENTS have no date acquired and no cost basis.  They are apparently K1 forms that I am waiting for from what I have read on the IRS web instructions.  Is this common, and do I have or should I to wait for the K1s to do the taxes?  I am doing this return for my cousin who is a widow and don't want to mess this up.  Thanks,  Also it looks like she may owe state (SC) and federal taxes without the K1s.   They usually show up after Feb and into March from my own past experience.  Trying to save her a $500 plus bill for tax return.  Thanks

Yes, this is common. Yes, you should wait for the K-1's to do the taxes. If you file without the K-1's, you will be required to amend the returns when you receive them.

If the K-1's have not been issued and you are nearing the deadline of April 15, 2020, I recommend filing an extension. To file an extension see this article for instructions: How do I file an extension?

Any tax owed will still need to be paid by April 15, 2020.
