Poll Workers

Received a W2 for work done as a poll worker in NJ. Added the income on the federal side, but NJ does not tax income for poll workers. How do I make the adjustment on my NJ Return to not include the income on NJ return?

Poll Workers

Because TurboTax automatically pulls all W-2 income into your state return, you must manually adjust the specific W-2 used for your poll worker pay to ensure it isn't taxed twice.

  1. Go back to the Wages & Income section where you originally entered your W-2s.
  2. Find the specific W-2 for your election board work and select Edit.
  3. Scroll down to the State and Local section (Boxes 15-17).
  4. Ensure Box 15 says NJ.
  5. In Box 16 (State wages, tips, etc.), enter $0 (zero).
Note: Do not leave Box 16 blank; explicitly entering "0" tells the software that none of those federal wages are taxable by New Jersey.
  6. Leave any amounts in Box 17 (State income tax withheld) as they are so you still get credit for any NJ taxes that were actually taken out of your check.

Re-visit the State Taxes tab. Your NJ wage total should now be reduced by the amount of your poll worker pay.
