Overpaid State Taxes, Maybe

I feel I may have overpaid my state taxes last year and was still paying to NYC taxes each paycheck because my company didn't update my address when I moved. Is there a way to review that or would I need to hire an accountant to help with this?

Overpaid State Taxes, Maybe

Good day larisakupris,

I can't review your taxes in this forum.  If you used TurboTax and purchased Live assistance; an agent may be able to review your return with you.  If you did not use TurboTax; you may have to hire a local accountant or tax preparer.  Some may offer a free review of prior year taxes as a courtesy in hope of getting your business.

Regarding last year's tax - If you moved from NYC but not NYS; you would be liable for NYC tax only during the period you lived in NYC.  You would calculate your part year NYC resident tax using form IT-360.1.

Regarding this year's tax - If you moved from NYC but not NYS, you can claim the NYC tax withheld as a payment on your IT-201 NY resident return.  If you move out of NYS entirely, you would have to file IT-203 and show no income allocated to NY and show the withholding to get a refund.

I would also suggest reaching out to your employer to have them stop withholding NYC resident tax if they have not done so already.

Thank you for reaching out to the TurboTax Community.
