Original taxes owed subtracted from amended return

Hi, my original return showed that we owed $500. I then received a late K1 with a lot of stock loses from an inheritance.  When I amended our return it showed a refund of $722.  The IRS subtracted the $500 from the $722 and sent me a check for $222.  It's my opinion that the amended return should replace the original return and I should be refunded the full $722.  Right?

See your submitted form 1040-X Line 16 which is where that originally paid $500 would be accounted for.

It should be there.

Oh, I see.  It is there and the assumption is that I already paid that and it would need to be returned.  So it is included in the $722.  Since I hadn't paid it yet they subtracted it out.  That makes sense.  Thanks!!!
