You are getting $9 back from the federal tax return, which is all that you had withheld from your pay. The exemption and the standard deduction are used to figure out what your tax is. It's not money that you receive.
So is this a good thing or bad ?
Any refund is a good thing. IsabellaG was just explaining the numbers on the tax return. If you have refundable credits, you would get back more than you paid in your paycheck, but the ones tretre832 referred to were not refundable credits.
My refund says that I am getting $9 back in federal. Last year I got over 1,000 back and I am wondering as to why when I use TurboTax for this year my tax return is so low . On my 1040 $9 is no where on there, which line can I check to see where my return is? Because it in no way should only be $9.
Form 1040 is on Line 20
That line is empty . It doesn’t even display the $9 the TurboTax says I will be getting in federal
This is from IRS official website
"Line 20 calculates any overpaid amount, subtracting line 16 from line 19. If there is no overpayment, the area will remain blank."
I am assuming you are seeing $9.00 in Turbo's Fed return calculations in the box at the top, and see nothing on Line 20 of 1040?
When you got to the part of Turbo Interview where you can choose to have all or part of your $ refunded to you or applied to your 2020 taxes, did you accidentally click on apply to 2020 taxes. That might possibly cause line 20 to be blank, if applied to 2020 taxes 9.00 will show on line 22.
Right. On 1040 it says 0.00 on line 20 but at the top on the app when I sign in it says total tax refund $9
Do you have figures in Line 16 and Line 19? If so Line 16 should be $9.00 lower than Line 19 and that figure should be on Line 20, irregardless whether you choose full refund or apply to 2020 taxes.
Other than that, I can't help you.
See www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040gi.pdf page 55
or call IRS [phone number removed] .
call or contact support at Turbotax and explain your issue.
Are you filing a Federal and state tax return? If so, the $9 at the top of your screen may represent your state tax refund since your Federal refund is showing $0 on line 20 of your Form 1040.
