Need to check entry regarding federal carryover worksheet

Screen Shot 2025-03-06 at 8.26.42 PM.png

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I came across the following question when going through the federal review section for my 2024 taxes. I went back to my 2023 tax returns to figure out the total tax payments I made in 2023. For me, I think I just have to add up the following:

-The tax payments I made during 2023. This is outlined in the Payments section of my 1040. Specifically line 33. For me, that total includes W2 and 1099 tax withholdings in 2023.

-The taxes that I owed upon filing my 2023 taxes. This is found in the "Amount you Owe" section of my 1040.

Is this all this TurboTax question is asking for? The total tax payments I made in 2023, including tax withholdings and the amount I still owed for the year? I just want to confirm. Thank you

Yes, on last year's (2023) return, total up:

  • all withholdings from W-2s and 1099s,
  • estimated tax payments, and
  • what you paid if you filed for an extension.

@DawnC  Thank you for the response. Can you clarify the part about what I paid if I filed an extension? In my case, I did not file an extension for tax year 2023. Is there some sort of additional payment to make when filing an extension?

An extension only give you extra time to file your taxes, not to pay your tax bill.   So, if you owed tax as of 04/15, but you filed an extension (did not file your return), you would be expected to pay the balance of tax you owed (or an estimate) with your extension request.   And that payment would be considered a tax payment that you would include in the amount of total withholding and payments.   You count payments you made when you filed your return or filed an extension.

@DawnC I just noticed that in the Turbotax question above, it notes my "2023 OR tax return", which would be my Oregon state tax return. So is Turbotax asking for just the state taxes that I paid in 2023? It's strange since this question popped up on my federal tax return.

When you are itemizing deductions on the federal return, the state and local taxes paid are a deduction. Any 2023 balance due taxes paid to your state during 2024 count on your 2024 return. Your picture shows carryover worksheet which leads me to believe there is more to the story.

@AmyC @DawnC Here are a few more details about my situation:

  • I took the standard deduction on my 2023 federal tax return
  • I moved out of Oregon in January 2023, so I no longer reside there.
  • I received a refund for my 2023 Oregon state tax return. So I did not pay any Oregon taxes in 2024 for my 2023 tax return. Unless you count any Oregon tax that was withheld on my W2 in 2024, in the short time that I was still residing in Oregon.

With these details in mind, does Turbotax's question make sense for my situation? If so, should I be providing just the Oregon tax that I paid in 2023 for my answer? I greatly appreciate the help.

After reviewing my 2023 Oregon state tax return, it does not appear that I had any Oregon state tax withheld in 2023 (since I moved out of state at the beginning of the year). In addition, I mentioned that I actually received a refund on my Oregon 2023 tax return. I think that it would make sense for me to simply enter $0 for the Turbotax question.

As I understand, the federal carry over worksheet is primarily to determine whether there are any deductions/refunds from 2023 that may apply to my 2024 tax return. From what I recall, I did not reserve any of my 2023 Oregon tax refund to apply for 2024.

Yes, if you had no withholdings for Oregon, you would enter 0 for the TurboTax question.  If you are unsure about your withholdings, you can review your Oregon Income Tax Return and view line 32.  This shows any withholdings for Oregon.  For more information, see the link below:
